The Edo State Flood, Erosion, and Watershed Management Agency (Edo FEWMA) was founded as the state’s principal agency for climate change mitigation, flood and erosion control, catchment and watershed management, and other environmental challenges.
Edo FEWMA is a successor agency established to ensure the long-term viability of the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP), a ten-year multi-sectorial and multi-skilled program that targets States with eroded land. Prior to the intervention of NEWMAP, Edo State endured significant flooding and gully erosion problems, claiming the lives and properties of a number of communities in the State
This environmental issue harmed the State’s socioeconomic activity and remained a major cause of concern for subsequent administrations in the State.
The intervention of the NEWMAP project provided an excellent opportunity for the Edo State government to form an agency to sustain the gains of intervention in degraded regions and assure continuity in addressing flood and erosion challenges in the State at the conclusion of the project in June 2022.
