Gapiona is located in the South of Benin City in Oredo Local Government Area.
The flooding problem was caused by a multiple of factors which include flat topography, removal of natural vegetarian which previously absorbed water ,as well as the obstruction of runoff and surface flow with construction of buildings and roads without provision for drainage.
To solve the problem a major drainage system was designed to accommodate the envisaged magnitude of stormwater. A total of seven detention ponds to capture the flood water from various flood sub catchments have been constructed.
These ponds are linked through underground culverts of different sizes. Prior to the NEWMAP intervention many residents had fled the area, particularly those that were located at the lowest points of each sub catchment.
